Medina takes the complexities of the brain and breaks it down into basic language with 12 rules that are especially applicable to the classroom and the workplace.His writing is conversational and the narrative bounces between scientific experiments, personal anecdotes, observations and ideas to implement in your classroom and office.To a teacher, the chapters on memory, attention and exploration are probably the most useful, as they are loaded with ideas that could alter your classroom and instruction, if employed. Other chapters, such as those on sleep and memory, are of tremendous importance when it comes to informing your students on effective learning and living (and yourself).Some of the chapters (gender, music and sensory integration) are interesting, but don't possess the same sort of pragmatic daily applicability as the others.One of the best things about Medinas ideas and suggestions for the workplace is that he stops short of ever saying that 'this is the way it is'. Instead, he is transparent about when research has presented us with a frank 'we don't know yet' and a shrug of the shoulders.Another highlight is Medinas humor and clear fascination with the field. His writing is light and his wit is often at his own expense. A quick read of the book though would be a mistake, and I recommend absorbing the material and considering its application, especially if it pertains to your field.The only drawback to the book was that he included a section on 'More Ideas' for each chapter. Some were useful (take a nap during he afternoon if you can), but others are less pragmatic. For instance, he envisions a reimagined school environment in which students experience the same content three times a day, to enhance memory. The only problem is that he spends as much space explaining he idea as he does admitting he doesn't know how this would work. The research isn't clear he admits and also considers how interacting with the material numerous times might even confuse the student.Overall, this is phenomenal read and highly recommended!

The premise of the book is that anger is okay and natural, and you do not need to feel ashamed or scared when you are angry. You can talk about your anger, and try to physically calm your body, but you cannot be abusive and hurt yourself, others, or property.If you are a parent hoping to help a child with anger issues, this is probably not the best book for you. It is basically a series of lesson plans designed for teachers/counselors to use when teaching students about anger and constructive ways to manage their anger.OTOH, I do plan to adapt a few of the lessons for my family. There are a few useful stories and worksheets that could reinforce some of the messages I am trying to get through to my children, such as: using "cold water" words to diffuse someone else's anger; figuring out "what lit the fuse" for an outburst of anger; slowly escalating your words "using your muscles" to explain when someone is bothering you, rather than exploding all at once; and coming up with "safe ways" to express anger, among others.

A Volcano in My Tummy: Helping Children to Handle AngerWhile this book does have some universal information that is useful, the primary objective seems to be aimed at class room environment for 6 to 10 year olds. I ordered this book when my boy was 3.5. So I couldn't make use of the lessons and activities. When my son gets a bit older it might be helpful even just at home. I read the book and it helped me think about my own anger and maybe gave me some ammo for dealing with his anger. But a better book I found was "What to do when your temper flares". That book gave us images of anger that were tangible. For example it likened allowing anger to run rampant is like driving a car. You have to learn how to drive and you have to learn how to handle anger. Even tho my boy is too young to drive he understood the concept immediately. This other book also says: It isn't what happens that makes you mad it's what you THINK about what happened that determines how you feel.In a group setting the lessons would be combined with class discussions but they don't lend themselves well to story time reading material. It isn't a bad book it just doesn't suit our needs. If you are a teacher or home schooler this might be just the thing.

As a play therapist, I needed something to help me work effectively with angry children. It was referred to me by a co-worker so I ordered it. The price was right and the contents was absolutely just what I wanted, needed, and oh so glad I have it. The lessons are short, easy to use with children, and the activities keep the children engaged in therapy. I love it. Amazing how quick the book shipped, it was brand new, packed really well,and this is how shopping should be.

I purchased this book when I got a divorce. I knew it would be hard on my 5 year old and I wanted to give her as much support as I possibly could. This book was amazing in helping my daughter work thru issues. I am happy to say that she is fairly well adjusted and give this book partial credit. She is now 8 and this books still sits on her bookshelf for whenever she may need it.

Nothing to do with time measurement.In another place he tells how to solder. Heat up and clean the probe. Check. Tin the tip, check. Then he says to apply more solder to the hot tip and let it run to the wire being soldered. Almost right. The right way is to heat the wire and apply the solder to the hot wire, not the tip of the solder tool.Is this picking nits? Yes. For a novice starter intro to your meter, it does the job. .

I finally understand how to use a multimeter! I’ve had several, always struggled because I didn’t know what each function was for or how to use it. This is the first book I’ve found that lays it all out in an easy to understand manner.

This is a great book with pictures on how to use a multi meter appropriately in testing voltages, amperage, continuity, diodes, capacitors, etc.

Pretty basic. Of course the little book wasn't expensive either, but its brevity meant that there were hardly any examples or instructions for use in day-to-day DIY tasks. The illustrations were poor, indeed, but, as already mentioned, the price was very reasonable, and using professional illustrations would presumably have required a higher price.

The author aimed to teach the basics of the Multimeter and how to use basic meter settings. That is exactly what I wanted as a novice. I am very satisfied and would recommend this book for beginners. He also wrote a more advanced book which I have not yet read.

Professor Andrew Dickinson is a Fellow of St Catherine's College and Professor of Law at the University of Oxford, a Solicitor and Consultant to Clifford Chance LLP in London, Visiting Fellow at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) and External Scientific Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law, in Luxembourg. He was closely involved in the Brussels I review process as an expert for the European Parliament and submitted a briefing note on the Commission's Proposal for a Brussels I bis Regulation.

Dr Eva Lein is the Herbert Smith Freehills Senior Research Fellow in Private International Law at BIICL.
