Like Thomas Hardy, who created his fictional Wessex out of his native Dorset, and William Faulkner, who used Lafayette County, Mississippi, as the basis for his imaginary Yoknapatawpha County, O'Hara transformed his hometown of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, and its surrounding anthracite coal region into one of literature's great fictional landscapes. Setting five novels and more than 50 stories in what he called his "Pennsylvania Protectorate," O'Hara recorded with great honesty the lives of Gibbsville's inhabitants--from Polish coal miners and Irish Catholic shopkeepers to the Protestant country club set. Editor Bruccoli, who championed O'Hara as one of America's great short writers in his biography The O'Hara Concern ( LJ 9/15/75), has gathered into one volume 55 Gibbsville stories written over a 30-year span. Included are some of O'Hara's most famous tales, including "The Doctor's Son," "Imagine Kissing Pete," and "The Bucket of Blood." Since many of these stories are drawn from previous collections, libraries already owning such anthologies as The Collected Stories of John O'Hara ( LJ 4/15/85) might want to consider this an optional purchase. This isn't necessarily only for historical appreciation. Great for designing if you're interested in classic architecture for fun or for professional concept work for entertainment. This is exactly what I needed.This book has clean orthographic line work to see designs, map layouts and cutaways clearly and brief histories of their origins for me to get a taste of and note, for future research purposes. Much more design oriented than pictures of ruins and not so clear depictions of exactly how certain designs worked.

Our study group is using this book as our selected reference to study for The National Council of Building Designer Certification. The book is a comprehensive look at architectural history, with wonderful graphics.

Imagine a complete history of architecture where every building looks like it belongs on the back of a dollar bill. Nothing but engravings, around 750, all works of art in themselves. And you'll enjoy the exemplary design and the high quality paper.

I did not receive this item for free....I am also not an Architect, so I can't speak to how well it compares toother architecture books. That being said, the illustrations are beautiful, the content is very organized,and mainly(the reason why i got it), the vocabulary and description was perfect for research.I went through the architecture section in the library before deciding on this book...it was the best I sawby a long shot.

This book is fantastic. It is the perfect combination of illustration and information. The detailed illustrations of famous architectural works please the eye while the descriptions of the styles, movements, and terminology engage the mind. The illustrated glossary at the end of the book provides a wonderful recap of architectural terminology including the classical orders, entablatures, pilasters, blind arcades, and many more. After looking through many architectural books that were either too dry and wordy or simply picture books with no information, I have finally found one that is fun to read and higly informative as well.

The idea to write an account of architectural styles and features using old engravings was an excellent one. Unfortunately this book is badly let down by not crediting and giving bibliographical reference to the sources of the fine engravings used. This is tremendously frustrating for readers like myself who are interested in seeking out the original publications and, in many cases, accessing better quality versions of the engravings which are poorly reproduced in this book. Some of the reproduced illustrations have been so much reduced in size that valuable detail is lost. The plans of ancient Beijing are a case in point. No indication is provided of buildings which have been destroyed or seriously damaged since the original 18th and 19th century artwork was produced. Neither are fanciful reconstructions differentiated from existing buildings in the antiquarian illustrations. Moreover, buildings are often shown without identifying them specifically. This fatally flawed publication is not a patch on Banister Fletcher's 'A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method.'

As mentioned in the title, I have not played this setting yet, but I am a big fan of Savage Worlds. This setting as mentioned by other reviewers is a little like Pirates of the Carribean and Water World, but the reference that seemed most prominent to me is the cartoon from the early 90's, the Pirates of Dark Water. This setting is a near-Earth flooded world with a mix of unusual races mostly based off of sea creatures of Earth. There are fish-men, sea lion-men, and a handful of others all waiting to be used by players. The plot is fairly open, so players can wander around the world making a living through trading, pirating, or searching for buried treasure all on the way to saving the world.A good setting in my opinion is one that makes players and GMs think of character possibilities and adventure ideas upon reading it. This setting delivers that in spades. I have 6 or 7 character ideas I'm in the middle of building, and I'm scrambling to gather a group to run through the adventure. If you are looking for a creative swashbuckling setting for your gaming group, look no further, you've found it.

This setting is an awesome fantasy pirate setting for Savage Worlds. It doesn't have your usual fantasy races, instead, it has 9 playable races, most of which are aquatic or just unique to this setting. The magic here is elemental, there are some new monsters and the Plot Point Campaign is epic. It has a lot of Savage Tales too, so you have many options to run a game with just the pre-written stories.

So much fun. It pulls from some of my favorite childhood memories. Pirates of dark water for example.

Simply the best. Used it to run a game in 7th sea setting after that system didnt gell with my group. Kind of wish we had just played it straight though, its a cool setting.

Great setting, really enjoy the plot point campaign. Note - the "perfect" binding is not the most durable, this will likely need to be re-bound (probably into a 3-ring binder) at some point before we're done with the campaign.

Great revision & update of a classic Savage worlds campaign. Note that this book also includes the material from the 50 Fathoms companion, so not only is it an update, but you get two books for the price of one. The material from both books were combined into the proper entries for each location, so being properly sorted, and organized, your job as a DM is much easier. Great value.

It got a little worped in the mail but still a great addiction

Best Savage Worlds supplement I've come across. Immersive setting, all new races, weapons, armor, story lines, and plenty of great monsters.
